Present year-round in milder western valleys; breeding colonies most active spring through late summer. Winter birds concentrate on open water.

Statewide wherever shallow water and secure nest trees exist — rivers, reservoirs, marshes, and cottonwood bottoms. Exact colony sites are protected.

Observed: Nest platforms are large stick structures high in cottonwoods above water or wet meadows.
